Speaking out against cruelty
Non-human animals have no voice with which to protest against their cruel treatment and with which to promote their interests. The human voice - including spoken and written language - is possibly the most powerful of human technologies, a tool for good or evil. It is a cultural prosthesis that has, over tens of thousands of years, finally given humans total dominion over nature. It is up to us whether to use this power for good or evil. History would seem to give a negative verdict on our capacity to restrain ourselves once we have an advantage over others. People are fond of quoting Lord Acton's famous words, "Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely," but seem oblivious of its applicability to how we treat other animals. Today, as a result of people's absolute power over them, animals are exploited absolutely.
Nonetheless, several people and institutions have spoken out for the other animals, giving voice to the voiceless. However, powerful corporate interests are always trying to silence these voices, in order to keep the consumers of animal products in the dark about the inhumane treatment of animals by the animal exploitation industries.
